Excerpt: “Congress created the NRC as an independent agency in 1974. Its mission is to license and regulate the Nation’s civilian use of radioactive materials, to provide reasonable assurance of adequate protection of public health and safety, and to promote the common defense and security and to protect the environment. The NRC regulates commercial nuclear power plants, nuclear fuel cycle facilities, decommissioning of licensed facilities and sites, nuclear waste, and other uses of nuclear materials, such as the medical use of radioactive materials, through licensing, inspection, and enforcement of its requirements.”
