Excerpt: “An estimated average of 3,620 civilian fire deaths were reported to fire departments across the country each year from 2018 to 2020. Because 76% of all civilian fire deaths occurred in residential buildings, the fatal fires in these types of buildings are the focus of this report. Each year, from 2018 to 2020, an estimated average of 1,900 fatal fires in residential buildings occurred in the U.S. These fires resulted in an annual estimated average of 2,745 deaths, 625 injuries and $230 million in property loss. This topical report, issued by the U.S. Fire Administration’s (USFA) National Fire Data Center (NFDC), addresses the characteristics of fatal fires in residential buildings as reported to the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS).” (footnotes omitted)
